Firefighter Christopher Koretski attended two days of specialized training in Little Compton Rhode Island conducted by "Got Big Water" over the weekend of June first and second. The focus of this class was Rural Water Supply. In some areas of the state such as Little Compton and even closer to home as in Ashaway or Charlestown, there are no fire hydrants, so the water to put out fires has to be brought into the scene a different way. The way water is moved to areas such as these are through water tanker trucks carrying anywhere from 1,500 gallons of water up to 3,500 gallons or more. Another option would be to draft the water out of a pond, stream, or dry hydrant system attached to a water source. Some of the other topics covered in the class included fire flow rates, water shuttles, tanker fill sites, and tanker dump sites.
We send a special thanks to Chief Richard Petrin of the Little Compton Fire Department for allowing us to attend this very informative class. It also is always great to work with other departments even those across the state. Some of those that participated included: Little Compton, Portsmouth, Warren, Prudence Island, Middletown, Northern Coventry, Scituate, Westport and Oakland-Mapleville Firefighters.
We look forward to being able to send our members to other specialized classes in the future. |
